Showit Template or Semi-Custom Website: Which Is Right for Your Business?

If you’ve reached the point where sharing your website link makes you wince slightly, it’s probably time for a change.

Perhaps you built it when your business was brand new, your services have changed, or it simply doesn’t look as good as the work you’re producing now. You know you need something better—but then comes the question: should you customise a Showit template yourself or choose a semi-custom website?

Honestly, both can give you a beautiful, professional website.

The real difference is how much of the work you want to do yourself.

If you’re happy to be hands-on and want a more affordable way to launch, a Showit template could be perfect. If you would rather hand the design over to someone else and have everything brought together for you, semi-custom is probably the better fit.

Let’s look at the difference.

What is a Showit website template?

A Showit template is a ready-made website design that you customise with your own branding, images, words and services.

The pages and layouts have already been designed, so you aren’t starting with a completely blank screen and wondering where everything should go. You simply take the design and make it your own.

Showit is one of my favourite website platforms because it gives you so much creative freedom. You can change colours, fonts, photographs and layouts without needing to understand code—or phone a developer every time you want to change a sentence.

A template could be the right choice if:

  • You’re working with a smaller budget.
  • You enjoy the creative side of your business.
  • You’re happy to learn your way around Showit.
  • You already have your branding, photographs and copy.
  • You want to work on your website in your own time.
  • You need a professional starting point rather than a design from scratch.

The biggest advantage is the price. You get a professionally designed website without paying for a designer to complete the whole build for you.

But I’ll be honest: buying a template isn’t the same as buying a finished website.

You will still need to choose your images, add your copy, personalise the design and check everything on desktop and mobile. The template takes away the scary blank page, but you’ll need to allow time to make it yours.

If that sounds enjoyable rather than daunting, a template is probably a very good fit.

So, what is a semi-custom website?

With semi-custom design, I start with one of my existing website designs and then rework it around your business.

I’ll bring in your colours, fonts, photography, personality and services. I can rearrange sections, refine the page flow and make sure visitors can quickly understand what you offer and what they should do next.

It isn’t simply a case of dropping your logo into a template and sending it back.

The aim is to create a website that feels like you—while avoiding the cost and much longer process of having every page designed entirely from scratch.

Semi-custom could be right for you if:

  • Your current website no longer matches the quality of your work.
  • You don’t have the time or patience to build it yourself.
  • Technology tends to send you into a mild panic.
  • You have lots of ideas but aren’t sure how to pull them together.
  • You want help presenting your services clearly.
  • You would feel more confident knowing a designer has checked the details.

You’ll still need to provide the information, images and personality that make your business different, but you won’t be left trying to turn all those separate pieces into a finished website on your own.

What is the real difference?

The simplest answer is this:

With a Showit template, I create the design and you customise it.

With a semi-custom website, you give me your content and branding, and I customise the design for you.

A template saves you money but asks for more of your time. Semi-custom saves you time and gives you more support, but requires a larger investment.

Neither is a lesser option. It simply depends on what you need at this stage of your business.

Will a template make my website look like everyone else’s?

This is one of the biggest worries people have about using a template, but no—it shouldn’t.

The same design can look completely different when it is filled with your colours, photography, words and personality.

Your brand is much more than the position of a button or the layout of a page. The images you choose, the way you speak and the details you include are what make the website feel like yours.

Two businesses can begin with exactly the same template and end up with websites that feel entirely different.

The secret is to customise it thoughtfully. You don’t need to move everything around purely to make it different. A good template has been arranged that way for a reason.

Often, strong photography and personal, well-written copy will make a much bigger difference than completely redesigning every page.

Is a Showit template only suitable for a new business?

Not at all.

A template is a brilliant option for a new business because it gives you a polished website without requiring a huge investment at the beginning.

But it can work just as well for an established business owner who enjoys design, knows exactly what they want and is happy to do the work themselves.

In the same way, you don’t need to have been in business for years before choosing semi-custom. If you want to launch strongly but know that building a website yourself will take six months and several small meltdowns, getting help may be the more sensible choice.

Your business stage matters less than your available time, budget and confidence.

Can a Showit website rank on Google?

Yes, Showit websites can rank on Google.

Showit allows you to set page titles, meta descriptions, headings, image descriptions and URLs. Its blog also works with WordPress, which makes it a great platform for publishing useful, searchable content.

But buying a lovely template—or paying more for semi-custom design—won’t automatically put you at the top of Google.

SEO also depends on your website content, page structure, mobile experience, site speed and whether you are genuinely answering the questions your potential clients are searching for.

A beautiful website gets people’s attention. Clear, helpful content gives them a reason to stay.

That is true whichever design route you choose.

Which option should you choose?

Choose a Showit template if you’re excited to make it your own, you’re comfortable doing some of the work and you want to keep your initial investment lower.

Choose semi-custom if you want a professional eye on your website, need help bringing everything together or simply don’t want website design added to an already long to-do list.

You don’t need the most complicated or expensive website.

You need one that reflects the quality of your work, makes sense to the people visiting it and gives them a clear, easy way to take the next step.

At Publish & Bloom, I create editorial Showit templates for creative businesses that care about how their work is presented. If you love one of the designs but would rather not customise it yourself, I can take care of that for you through my semi-custom service.
